After the initial setup on each PC, I could not get the PCs to recognize the My Book during a normal boot. This is where I ran into my first frustration. I wanted to make sure, I could easily move the drive between my two (2) PCs and have the drive be recognized by each PC.

The PC recognized the My Book and everything was fine.

I did not install the WD backup program or any other non-essential programs. When I got the drive, I followed the Western Digital instructions to install the basic software/drivers and to make the connections. Maybe what is important is the exactly what you did to each MyBook drive just before the drives stopped working. What I am getting at is that maybe there is something on one of your PC's that is conflicting with the MyBook drives. After changing my methods, I never had a problem with the camera again. After that, when taking pictures, I put a copy of the pictures on my computer (instead of moving the pictures), and I only deleted the picture from the card with the camera. That, if I did, I could damage the camera's programing (or something like that). I was then told to never format or change the card's contents with the PC. I had to have the camera fixed by the manufacturer. After doing these things, my camera started giving me problems. I also deleted pictures on the card with my PC. I once formated the camera's card with my PC. But since it did work and then stopped working, something happened to it while it was in your possession.
If the drive never worked, that is one thing. You could also ask Western Digital if they can look at the drive for you to verify what went wrong. I really do not know, but I am just throwing some things out to you. Another possibility is that the My Book is getting damaged some how (maybe from where you are placing it or how you are handling it). Since two units died after a short amount of useage, I can only imagine that the MyBook is getting negatively impacted when connected to your computers. I absolutely have no suggestions other than to contact Western Digital again with the additional information you now have after getting the 2nd MyBook. The second one is the one you brought home and it only worked for an hour (during which you were able to use the My Book), then it stopped working.
If I am reading your post correctly, the My Book you initially wrote about was the one you returned and the store smashed. I really do not know what is happening in your situation. Sometimes my My Book would not stay on for long when I pressed the button if my PC was not on, but pressing the button a second time resulted in the My Book staying on. (I contributed the same contents to Seagate forum.Wow.

I think Acronis has known this bootable media problem for years but has not resolved the problem so as to boost own software business. Western Digital/Seagete should ask Acronis to write right Acronis True Image program so that all users can use bootable media without trouble.ī. It is wasting time, money, individual efforts, and human activities worldwide for Western Digital/Seagete to let all users resolve this bootable media problem. At the boot sequence, did not go ahead after writing.
At the boot sequence, after reading over the disc, hung up at the program’s home screen. : “Starting Acronis loader …, Acronis loader fatal error: Boot drive (partition) not found” My PC reads and runs bootable media such as OS (Vista, XP) installing CDs, MiniTool Partition Wizard ver 5.2 bootable CD, KNOPPIX ver 6.0.1 bootable CD, KNOPPIX DVD ver 6.2 bootable USB flash memory.
I am using Western Digital and Seagate HDDs - (simple use, no dynamic nor RAID use).
